Goal Setting 101

Goal Setting 101

Goal setting can be a daunting task. Whether or not you’ve been putting a pen to paper to actually write down your goals, you’ve been achieving them since a young age. Maybe you wanted to make the starting line up of your high school’s soccer team, or you dreamed of earning a 4.0 grade average in college. You’ve been working towards your goals for so long, it’s an inherent part of your being today.

If you struggle with goals, the issue is probably not finding goals to set, but rather being more successful at achieving those goals you have. To become more effective in achieving your goals, there are just a few steps to take and tips to keep in mind.

1. Break out your notepad and pen

The first step to becoming more successful at achieving your goals is to write the object of your ambition down. Your goal should be all of these things:

  • Realistic
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Scheduled – you need a deadline

As a real estate agent, a great goal to set could be: to continue my education of the industry by attending one event or webinar each quarter of 2017.

2. Think through the tactics needed to achieve your goal

Anyone can write a goal down on paper, but it takes a bit more prodding to understand the necessary steps you need to take to achieve the set goal. If you want to continue your education as a real estate agent, you’ll need to research events and webinars that are available and relevant to you, and then register for those you are interested in.

3. Show up and be present

You’ve heard the phrase, “Actions speak louder than words.” Well, as it relates to goal setting, truer words have never been spoken. You’ve set your goal; you’ve identified the actions you need to take to achieve the goal, now you actually have to take action.

Mark your calendars with the events and webinars you plan to attend, set a Google alert or an alarm on your phone – whatever you need to do to hold yourself accountable and ensure that you are not going to miss out. This includes silencing your phone while you’re at the event; you’ve committed to yourself, now don’t distract yourself!

Most importantly, be honest with yourself. The great thing about goals is that once you’ve set them, you have the opportunity to evaluate how you are progressing against the intentions you’ve set, and you can always alter things to be more realistic, or more aggressive.
